Présentation

In the article below the author intends to analyse the reformist discourse (khitab al-islah) of the Ibadite scholar Muhammad Ibn Yusuf Atfayyash by employing the historical-critical method. On chosen examples from Atfayyash’s later work, in which his reformist attitude becomes apparent, the author will attempt to identify and to explain the unsaid. The focus will be on the advice (nasiha) given by Atfayyash and its appendant components in the sense of reform. This is of special importance as Atfayyash’s discourse has always been strongly influenced by his attempt to give practical advice to his fellow men and by his reference to his contemporary reality. Advice is virtually omnipresent in his work. I will address his advice on the others (the Sunnites) as Atfayyash attempted to promote his rapprochement to the others based on dialogue and to bring to an end the era of concealment and secrecy (kitman). Likewise will be explained the historical background of the Ibadite reformist movement, taking into critical account not only Ibadite and Sunni sources but western secondary literature as well.
